For generations, automotive brands have been built around engineering, performance, design, reliability and driving experience.
Those fundamentals still matter. But electrification, connected technology, software-defined vehicles and increasingly digital customer journeys are changing what customers expect. At the same time, new entrants are challenging established manufacturers with different approaches to technology, retail and brand building.
The challenge is no longer simply to build a better vehicle.
Automotive brands increasingly need to create a better relationship with the customer.

Automotive has traditionally benefited from powerful brand loyalties built around engineering heritage, motorsport, national identity and distinctive design.
But customers now have considerably more choice.
Deloitte's 2026 automotive research found that only 39% of UK consumers purchased their current vehicle from the same brand as their previous vehicle, creating opportunities for challengers while increasing pressure on established manufacturers to differentiate and retain customers.

For established brands, loyalty must increasingly be earned rather than assumed.
Distinctiveness matters.

The automotive customer journey now extends far beyond the showroom.
Customers discover, configure and compare vehicles online before moving between digital and physical environments throughout purchase and ownership. Yet the physical experience remains important: 53% of UK consumers surveyed by Deloitte identified a dealer visit as their most-used information source when considering their next vehicle.
The strongest automotive brands therefore connect digital, physical and human experiences into one coherent journey.
A compelling campaign cannot compensate for a frustrating configurator. Beautiful vehicle design cannot compensate for a poor dealership experience.
Every interaction contributes to the brand.

JLR provides a powerful example of how brand architecture and distinctiveness can unlock growth.
Under its Reimagine strategy, the business has moved towards a House of Brands built around Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar, giving each greater freedom to develop its own positioning, personality and customer experience while retaining connections to Land Rover heritage.
Range Rover has evolved from a pioneering luxury off-road vehicle into a global luxury marque, combining design, capability, craftsmanship and British heritage.
Defender draws on the same heritage but occupies a very different territory built around adventure, capability, exploration and resilience.
JLR captures the distinction succinctly: Range Rover is about “leading by example”, while Defender is about “embracing the impossible.”
The approach demonstrates how brand architecture can unlock existing brand equity, creating greater clarity while opening opportunities to reach different audiences and markets.
There is also a commercial dimension. Defender achieved record wholesales of 115,404 vehicles in FY25, while JLR reported its highest full-year profit in a decade.
The vehicles remain fundamental. But the brands increasingly create the meaning around them.

The strongest automotive brands don't simply sell vehicles. They create distinctive worlds that people want to become part of.
